A new school in Seven Oaks needs a name!
The elementary school does not have an official name yet, but students have some ideas!
Nine- year-old, Jorja, thinks it should be named after someone Métis. Jorja and some of her classmates made a video to express their idea. Jorja said she and some of her classmates want their new school to be named in honour of Chanie Wenjack, an Ojibwe boy who died in 1966 after running away from a residential school in Northern Ontario.
The original plan was to call it Templeton School, however they are asking the Seven Oaks School Division to choose a name that honours Indigenous culture instead.
The new school is set to open next September.
