With gas prices expected to increase yet again to a possible $2 for regular fuel, carbon tax, tax in general and soaring prices for groceries… I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t going away and there’s some major adjustments that could be made to help your bank account from slowly depleting.
- Consider consolidating your errands to a single day of the week where you go and do everything, and consider doing them in low traffic times…
- Keep a list, whether its on a white board in the kitchen or a shared notes folder on your phone with your family so you dont forget anything when you do head out.
- Try cooking from home more often… if you find yourself heading to food delivery to satisfy your cravings, try purchasing the ingredients to make those things yourself! Freeze meals so you dont have food going bad if you don’t eat it in time.
- Use the 24 hour rule: If there’s something you want, think it over for at least 24 hours and if you decide you still want it, then consider getting it… there’s many things we want but don’t ultimately need or sometimes even have a purpose for. Put thought into all of your purchases
- Sell your unwanted clothing to a consignment store instead of just throwing them out. Try Plato’s Closet or something similar… even if you only get $30 for a garbage bag of clothes, it’s $30 you didn’t have before.
- Donate your unwanted items instead of tossing them… we need to take care of each other and if youre struggling to get by as it is, there’s many other people who might find value in your unwanted goods who are struggling as well.
- Avoid buying new items… Kijiji, Varagesale and Facebook Market Place can be your best friends for finding barely used and sometimes brand new items at a third of the price you’d pay for it in store.
- Work from home if possible – Saving the gas money will do wonders for your wallet.
